Barton paints in both oils and pastels and follows a figurative tradition in his work. He is passionate about the environment and so it is not surprising that the landscape forms a major subject of his paintings. However, his range of work also includes still life and portraiture.
He has exhibited regularly with regional and national arts bodies including the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
Before moving to Scotland in 2014 he lived in West Yorkshire where he was Chairman of Leeds Fine Artists - a collective of professional painters in the Yorkshire region.
