Douglas Gray studied painting at Dundee College of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London, returning to Fife in 1976. Having abandoned painting, he worked in a factory for eight years then moved to Edinburgh.
He worked for Edinburgh Printmakers and was able to make a large number of etchings and woodcuts in a powerful, expressionistic style. Very few paintings from this time survive. He moved to Kinghorn in 1990 and was involved in creating Kinghorn Station Gallery and Studios.
Since then he has dedicated himself to filling up his studio with paintings.
